How to Kick Bad Habits for New Year's

We try to muster up the strength and willpower to change our unhealthy habits, but some days it feels impossible. Living in a world of endless possibilities and freedom is both a blessing and a curse.

Whether or not you’re trying to stop sleeping in, stop smoking, or stop eating junk food, this blog is for you! I am going to tell you about a few ways that you can break your unhealthy habits so you can live a healthy and happy life.

Identify Triggers

 

 


It certainly makes you feel good, that much is obvious. If you dig deeper you might uncover a bit more.

Are you eating two bags of chips and ice-cream because you feel lonely or you’re trying to calm down your anxiety? Did you decide to smoke that night because you’re used to smoking right before bed?

Reflect on the thoughts, feeling, and triggers that compel you to engage in this habit.

Self-Compassion

 

 


Feeling unworthy and ashamed probably won’t yield positive results. Has hating yourself gotten you anywhere? Try to approach this issue with love and self-compassion.

Cut yourself some slack. No one is perfect or flawless. We all have our vices. Once you beat your habit, you’ll feel so strong for overcoming such a difficult challenge!

Replace the Reward

 

 


Your brain will urge you to continue to reward it. What other ways can you get the same reward in your brain? In other words, what are some healthy feel-good alternatives?

Experiment with a lot of different things. Try calling a friend, taking a bath, watching your favorite show, reading a book, or listening to music. There are lots of activities out there that will bring you joy. 


Visualization

 

 


Before you get up in the morning and before you fall asleep at night, visualize yourself breaking free of the habit.  When you replay your goals in your mind and imagine yourself fulfilling them, you’re setting yourself up for success.

Imagine yourself eating something healthy instead of junk food or throwing away your pack of cigarettes. Visualization has proven to be very powerful and enjoyable.

Breaking habits is not always easy, but it is definitely worth it. It is important to feel in control of your life. When your habits rule over you, you might feel powerless.

You deserve to live a life where you feel in charge and empowered. I hope this list of ways to break bad habits helps you to achieve your goals. Never give up!
