4 Secrets to Attaining Wrinkle-Free Skin

Though turning back the clock may be impossible, you do have the power to achieve a healthy, younger look! Today, I'm going to talk about a few anti-aging tips to add to your skincare routine.

You may be able to prevent wrinkles from cropping up if you follow a few simple tips. Skin loses elasticity over time, but there are certain factors that cause this process to speed up- including genetics, sun exposure, and pollution.

Read on to hear about a few secrets to attaining a youthful, wrinkle-free look.

1. Lifestyle

Quitting bad habits is never easy, but if you want your skin to beam with beauty, you've got to make some lifestyle changes. Ditch the cigarettes! Not only is it affecting your health, but its irritating your skin. You are breathing in a toxic irritant that will cause you to appear as if you've aged more rapidly.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, and I don't mean ones that are laden with sugar. Stick to pure, filtered water and sugar-free electrolyte beverages, such as Pedialyte or electrolyte tablets that will dissolve in your water glass.

I'm sure you know this already but I will say it anyway: sun exposure will damage your skin (spoiler alert!) Do yourself a favor by putting on a toxic-free organic sunscreen and taking breaks to sit in the shade. Buy sunglasses and a wide-rim hat to cover you from the sun.

Skip the tanning sessions and pack of smokes and instead, chug some good old H20!

2. Reduce Stress

Have you ever seen someone who looks like they've aged a decade in the last month? They were probably under an enormous load of stress.

While there are certain things you cannot control - trauma, grief, misfortune - the way we cope is entirely up to us. Even small stressors, such as sitting in stand-still traffic or losing a hour of sleep can weigh us down if it happens consistently.

Stress is not a friend to your skin. In fact, it's your worst enemy. Try exercises that are proven to reduce your stress- like meditating, yoga, stretches, walking, Qi gong, forest bathing, gardening, or dancing. Stress-reducing exercise looks different for everyone. Some people will see their stress evaporate when they dance to their favorite song. Others would find dancing physically painful and unenjoyable.

All you have to do is be mindful and find joy in your life. When you cope with stress in a healthy way, your skin will thank you! 

3. Beauty Sleep

You may be under the impression that if you wake up early and go to bed late you'll be more fun and more productive. By day you complete all your projects and by night, you're out dancing with friends until the wee hours of morning. This is the way to get the most out of life, right? WRONG.

You're doing your skin a major disservice when you don't sleep. Sleep deprivation will cause your skin to age more quickly
Sleep is when your cells get their chance to regenerate. Five hours of sleep is probably not enough. Most people wake up feeling well-rested with at least seven hours under the belt.

7-9 hours of sleep is recommended. Have you noticed that when you don't get enough sleep you have dark circles beneath your eyes and puffy eyelids?  Let's try to keep that from happening. Stay well rested.

Hold on Sleeping Beauty, read this gem before you go. Sleeping on your stomach can cause wrinkles to form more quickly. Try sleeping on your back to reduce the likelihood of facial wrinkles.

4. Anti-wrinkle Cream

What are dermatologists saying about anti-wrinkle creams and gels? Find ones that contain retinoids, a derivative from Vitamin A that increases collagen production. It will help take the edge off of those fine lines, leaving your skin looking smooth and soft.

You can purchase these products at a beauty store or at your local drug store. Start with a small amount, as it can cause dryness and peeling. Once your skin grows more tolerant to it, add a bit more. Put it on before you go to bed to get the best results. You want to make sure you're protecting and hydrating your skin. 

Not all wrinkle-creams are created equal. Speak with a dermatologist to figure out what is best for your particular skin-type. You're going to want to make sure that you don't purchase something that is too potent.
